GENERAL REVISION OF PROPERTY TAX IN ALL MUNICIPALITIES AND TOWN PANCHAYATS UNDER THE TAMIL NADU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITIES ACT, 1920

The Chennai Corporation has proposed a property tax increase of 50% for residential properties in central regions and 25% for areas that were added to Chennai in 2011 and the other 20 Municipal Corporations.
“The government has accepted the recommendation, and instructions have been provided to different Municipal Corporations for action through Corporation Councils,” according to an official statement.
According to the Government Gazette released in this respect, property taxes for residential properties below 600 sq.ft. have been increased by 25%, while those between 601 and 1,200 sq.ft. have been increased by 50%.
Residential properties between 1,201 and 1,800 square feet will see a 75 percent rise in property tax. The property tax has been raised by 100% for those with homes larger than 1,800 square feet.
In the case of non-residential properties, the property tax has been raised by 100% for commercial premises, and by 75% for industries, private schools and colleges, and self-financing courses/departments in assisted institutions.
