Muharram (or Muharrum) is a gazetted holiday in India, marking the start of the Islamic year.
It starts on August 10 this year. Muharram is also known as Muharram-ul-Haram. It is the second holiest month for the Muslim people around the world, following Ramzan.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and it is regarded the second holiest month after Ramzan. The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, will be celebrated in the second week of August this year.
The Islamic new year begins in the month of Muharram and finishes in the month of Dhul al-Hijjah, as previously stated. In compared to the Gregorian calendar, the year is around 11 days shorter. The appearance of the new moon marks the beginning of each month.
