On November 30, 2021, the opportunity for franchises to retain players for the VIVO Indian Premier League 2022 season concluded.
The eight teams were entitled to retain up to four players, with a total pay limit of INR 90 crore available at the mega auction for each club, with a maximum of three Indians, two abroad players, and two uncapped Indians.
The Player Retention option was chosen by each of the eight teams, with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Mumbai Indians (MI) each keeping four players. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) each kept three players, while Punjab Kings (PBKS) kept two. Thus, the PBKS has the largest salary purse available, with INR 72 crore, while the Delhi Capitals has the smallest, with INR 47.50 to utilise in the big auction.
There are eight abroad players and four uncapped Indians among the 27 players who have been retained.
